Q: What kind of Taijiquan will I learn in your school?
A: You will learn Chen Style Tai Chi. The Chen family-style is the oldest and parent form of Taijiquan styles. Chen-style is characterized by Silk reeling, alternating fast/slow motion and bursts of power. The most common modern divisions of Chen Style Taijiquan are the Old Frame (Lao Jia) and the New Frame (Xin Jia). Within these divisions one will also find regional variations, as well as variations attributable to individual preferences and taste. In our school you will learn the Old Frame according to Grand Master Chen Zhenglei (太极拳大师陈正雷). Contemporary Chen Style Tai Chi is typically practiced for a number of widely varying reasons: health, external/internal martial art skills, aesthetics, meditation or as an athletic/competition sport.
Q: What’s a typical beginners’ Chen-style Taijiquan training class like?
A: A typical class is made up of 3 parts: -Single movement exercises, known as Chansi Gong, or silk reeling. These are a series of simple movements which build on the postural alignment and qi circulation developed by standing post exercises. The aim is to develop the basic strengths and coordination of Taijiquan: such as, whole-body power, use of frame and abdomen to initiate movement and generate power: and the fundamental concepts of opening (kai: expansive power) and closing (he: contracting power).- Stepping techniques (bu fa). These exercises build leg power, and teach basic footwork strategies.-Forms (Taolu). These are unarmed solo choreographies of specific actions of attack and defense. You will start by learning the Old Frame Routine One (老家一路,Lao Jia Yi Lu)
Q: How long will it take me to learn the Old Frame Routine One?
A: About three or six months if you join our classes at least twice a week. Of course this also depends on your own physical abilities and the time you invest in training.
Q: What happens next?
A: Following the development of basic skills, the student begins to focus on more martially oriented objectives, such as the ability to interact with an opponent, and to discern , neutralize, and respond to his incoming force by studying Taiji Pushing Hands (推手, tui shou). At a certain point, the students also learn to coordinate their movements in attack and defense with their breathing.Advanced students can also study weapon forms such as the Taiji sword.
